My Own Forest Garden

My home is located on the edge of a forest, and growing crops in the forest can be challenging. When we decided to put in a home garden, my family committed using the one open sunny area, built a strong 4 foot fence to keep out the deer and turkeys and started to grow crops. In my garden you will find garlic, blackberries, asparagus, potatoes, tomatoes, peppers, sorrel and a variety of culinary and medicinal herbs. I like to grow different and unique plants. I even tried peanuts in a container one year! Flexibility and curiosity have allowed me to grow much of our family's food.  Every day of the year we eat at least one item that is home grown.  Adaptating to your surroundings is essential to making a successful garden, and we find that using native plants is the key to growing in non-traditional environments.
